    Wonderful piece of Early American shipping history
    bound book of letters
    approx 20
    appears to a journal of shipping business letters sent by different people, they must have shared the journal!
    letters in the front of the book are written by master mariner CAPTAIN DAVID LUCE (MARTHAS VINEYARD LUCE FAMILY) , dated 1837 & 1838, from Marseille and Antwerp
    They appear to be sent to the ships owner HENRY WILLIAM DANGERFIELD ESQ, ALEXANDRIA, WASHINGTON DC (an attorney who moved to Texas)
    they are noted "copy" in left corner, there are 12 of these
    talk of tobacco cargo, prices, cooperage (sent by the brig COURTNEY and an unamed packet)
    Some correspondence to Timothy Wiggins & Co. (failed in the crash of 1837)
    At the end of the book there are letters from ANDREW HALE ESQ (Hale family we believe, out of Newburyport, Ma.) HALE, ADAMS & CO. some are dated 1827, Antwerp
    Letter dated 1827, signed HORATIO SPRAGUE (ambassador, Gibraltar) introducing CAPTAIN DAVID LUCE OF THE BRIG "SALLY"

    Another letter of introduction for Captain Luce, Savannah, Liverpool 1827, cannot make out signature
    Last letter mentions the ship "JOHN MARSHALL"
