    Description

    This 3' decorative
    harpoon
would make a nice accent piece to your nautical rec room or office. The handle is round  2 1/4" in diameter burnished cedar pole with two coats of gloss urethane. The shaft is 3/8" diameter steel painted black with a cast aluminum tip brass toned, the rope is 1/4" pure manila whipped with black nylon cord.
Lewis Temple invented this harpoon tip which is named after him (Temple Toggle). The tip on this harpoon is a smaller version. A skilled blacksmith from New Bedford, MA, Temple a former slave, in 1848 created a new type of harpoon with a moveable head that prevented the whale from slipping loose. His harpoon was called "the most significant invention in the history of whaling and used by virtually every whaleman".
