    Description

    An incredible piece of early American folk art! This needle point on silk fire screen was created by Mary Brewerton, of a prominent New York City merchant family At the Sketchley sisters Quaker boarding school In Poughkeepsie New York in 1803. The Sketchley school existed from around 1800 until 1804, and one other needlepoint appears to be known, at the Smithsonian institution. The allegorical needlepoint measures 16" x 15 1/2 ” in a Federal shield frame, all mounted on a 3 footed earn topped pole. Very good overall shape with some staining along the top margin. One foot of the pole is cracked, and there are other minor losses to the pole itself. A truly incredible early piece of American folk art from a ladies boarding school run by Quakers in upstate New York. 55 inches tall and weighing just over 10 pounds.
