In very good condition. The paint appears to be mostly original with some wear. No damage or repairs.
Hessian Soldier Andirons of cast iron, 19-1/2" H. X 10-1/2" W. X 19" D., American, early 20th Century, stamped "M BIBI/2000/Pat. Pen.". These were the best known pattern of early 19th Century cast iron andirons and it is thought that because the real Hessian Soldiers, who fought against the Colonists during the American Revolution, were so disliked that the Americans enjoyed burning them in effigy in their fireplaces.
A very rare set of figural fireplace tools comprised of a stand, shovel, poker and tongs, each with a handle in the form of a Hessian soldier, with what appears to be original paint in exceptionally fine condition, probably made by the Howes foundry of Boston, Ma., circa 1900, 29-1/2" H., the stand is 6-1/2" x 8-1/2".
