Description

Magnificent hand-hammered copper fireplace hood, circa 1905. This hood comes from the J.L. Fisher Mansion in Punxsautawney Pennsylvania at 217 West Mahoning St., which was referred to as Millionaires Row of the time for this city. The architect was Charles Marquedent Burns (1838-1922) from Philadelphia. The Fisher Mansion was later used as headquarters for the John Jacob Fisher chapter of the American Legion, then as the Punxsautawney Memorial Library starting November 2, 1944 until the library was moved to the Civic Center in 1974. From my understanding, the library is where the famous groundhog Punxsautawney Phil lived, and still resides to this day at the current library. I purchased this item in 2003 from the salvage company that razed the building around the year 2000 or so.
After purchasing the fireplace hood, I contacted the Punxsautawney Historical Society and received some history on the property. According to them, the mansion was built around 1905 and had 27 rooms. I was hoping to find an interior photo of the room with the fireplace hood in it's original placement. The historical society does have many glass plate negatives of the exterior and interior of the property, and also has the ability to print photos from those glass-plate slides. However, being that I am not near Pennsylvania and it would be best for myself or the new owner to look through those slides personally in-person to know exactly what to look for (there were many fireplaces in the mansion), that is where my research ends. I am happy to include all the information/correspondence that I acquired up to this point.
I've looked this piece over with my naked eye and I do not see any stamps or marks from Stickley or Roycroft. However, the overall craftsmanship is very good and the original unrestored patina is authentic and exceptional. There is some slight gapping between the center and side sections of the copper sheet, and 1 missing rivet at the very top, furthest left, which is hardly noticeable even if mentioned. This is how it was when I received it, and my opinion is it's best not to try to add a modern replacement rivet since it might detract more than the omission itself.
Size of the fireplace hood is 41-1/2" wide, 8-1/8" deep (not including rivet heads and protruding tab at top, rear), 42" height.
I kept the wood shipping crate from my purchase, which was custom-made for this piece. The crate can be sent by FedEx/UPS without the need for Freight Shipping. The shipping calculator is based on the accurate size and weight of the crate, and your location. The item will be insured for full value (.10 for first 0 + $.70 per 0 x 77 = .00 shown here as a handling fee). I do not mark-up any shipping or insurance costs. I will ship this item internationally via eBay's Global Shipping Service. You are welcome to view this item in-person in Appleton, Wisconsin before making your purchase. Any claims for damage will need to be directed to the shipping service. All sales final.
