Description
Up for your consideration is this authentic shipwreck artifact. The artifact is a very rare and early 400 year old iron boarding grenade recovered from the famous Dutch East Indiaman "PRINCESS MARIA".The " Princess Maria" was the largest Indiaman in the world, when she hit Silver Carn on the Isles of Scilly in 1686.
The grenade is complete and remarkkably still has it's original wood fuse stopper!! The grenade is hollow and empty of it's powder and is 100 percent stable. Both the grenade and wood fuse have been professionally conserved after two years of electrolysis treatment.
These grenades would have been lit and thrown on to the deck of another ship during battle.
Not many artifacts were recovered from this early wreaksite and only a handful of boarding grenades have EVER been recovered from any wreck.
This artifact comes with two certificates of authenticity hand-signed by the original salvors.including one with tha photo of the grenade and the the other with the history of the "Princess Maria" shipwreck:
The Princess Maria was one of the largest ships that the Dutch East India Company ever operated between Holland and the rich colonies of the Far East .She was the Flagship of the line ,1100 tons and 160 feet long. On the 4thJanuary 1686 she left her home port of the Texel under charter to the Chamber of Amsterdam carrying with her 400 soldiers , sailors and merchants and a rich cargo estimated to be several hundred thousand guilders, much of which she carried in silver pieces of 8. After a hard journey down the channel she left Plymouth towards the end of January, where she had sheltered from the bad weather . Unfortunately, a violent storm blew up on the Silver Carn off the Isles of Scilly and , battered the ship to pieces and destroyed. her.
Before these boarding grenades were found on the "Princess Maria" archaeologists were not aware that these were in use on ships this early.
A museum quality and exordinarily rare shipwreck artifact to add to your collection.
Good luck!
