    Description

1880 Barn Wood Fireplace Mantel Beam Shelf
    Architectural Salvage
    4” x 6” x 54”
This original piece of old growth wood came from an 1880 structure located in a small farming community in Northwest Ohio. It was part of a truss system that was included within the roof structure. Similar to the old style bridge tressles used in the old days. We are including a picture of this actual piece (notice arrow) while still attached to the structure during demolition.
At the time that it was removed, it was still going strong after 140 years of Ohio’s hot and humid summers, brutally cold winters, and rough and tumble thunderstorms.
This piece is a pine wood species. It measures 54” in length, it is 4” thick, and 6” in width. These are actual measurements. Not measurements by today’s standards where 1/2” disappears from your piece of lumber.
Notice in the pictures the very hard character lines. The edges bear visable crosscut saw marks left by the ancient sawmills used at that time, and you also will notice a few of the original square cut iron nail holes in this piece.
Also notice the close up picture of where an electric porcelain holder was used as electricity was introduced to this building. You will notice a nail hole, a circular impression from the holder, and also an impression where a bent nail made contact with the wood.
We have introduced a bit of linseed oil on this piece to bring out the natural and unique characteristics of the wood.
We have several more pieces that we plan to bring out in the future as we are slowly removing this building and repurposing the materials to be used in another structure for another 140 years!
Also, some of the last pictures show the 1880 date stone and also the original bookkeepers ledger showing the costs involved (and dates) of this structure.
Lastly, do not be fooled by other sellers of “reclaimed” wood. It is sometimes hard to catch, but the experienced eye can tell the difference between authentic old growth wood and a simple reproduction.
This is pure and authentic Americana History!
