Description
1958 H&B Model C12 34 inch, 31.25oz. game used bat. The description in bat hobby pioneer David Bushing's letter that will be mailed with the bat states there are signs of good game use, the handle has been cracked.
Mike Specht one of the Bats book authors has the H&B factory records. As noted in Mike’s printed email copy that will be mailed with this bat, Richardson placed 4 orders during the regular season. The C12 was originally made for Nellie Fox, and 3 of the 1958 shipments to Richardson have the Nellie Fox signature on the barrel. This bat is one of six that were ordered on 6/19/58 as it is the only 1958 C12 order with Richardson’s signature.
Although Richardson ordered 3 more C12 bats on 2/6/59, this is a 1958 bat. In the early 1990’s, Bill Riddell a Bats book coauthor discovered a defect at 2:00 on the centerbrand oval. His theory that only 1958 bats had this notch has stood the test of time and is now accepted as fact. Vince Malta identifies this 1958 defect as C-15A 8 on page 31 in his book Louisville Slugger.
One more confirming factor is that the bats ordered in 1959 were 31 oz. The 1958 order was 32 oz. The bat currently weighs 31.25 oz. While a 3/4 oz. weight loss for a nearly 50year old bat is normal, bats typically do not gain weight over time.
