    Description

    [21037] (USS Yankee).
    C. 1898 Group of 5 Large-Format Albumen Photographs of the USS Yankee - Portside and Underway .
Brooklyn New York: Muller Marine Photographer, 1898.  Group includes 3 images of the ship at dockside, with sailors and crew, harbor equipment, some ladies visiting, a candid look at the crew and visitors, one with a view of the debarkation of a very fancy launch with whom appears to be the recently-elected Mayor Robert Van Wyck (1847-1918) tipping his bowler to a Navy man's salute - we speculate perhaps these taken at the time when the ship was renamed and commissioned at New York on 14 April 1898 under the helm of Commander Willard H. Brownson (Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships); and 2 images of the ship while moving off to sea, one image having a bit of a view of city buildings in the background; one of the docked images with clear lettering of the ship's name across her port beam; with the small stamp of the Muller Marine Photographer 714 Monroe Street Brooklyn on back of one of the mount cards; photographs approx. 8" x 10" image size, with the mounts, 11" x 14"; "Spanish American War" written in a modern hand on back of one; little waviness to cards, some fading of imagery in one; one image with 1" rub-abrasion; some spottiness to cards; images in very good condition overall and a nice look at this United States Navy cruiser-transport which saw much action in the Spanish American War, on fighting cable-cutting escort, on blockade duty, chasing and engaging in battle with runners, dispatch delivery and ammunition & troop transport, a very active ship.
