Description
Reproduction and replacement parts for the No15 Transit Chest and its relatives for Lee Enfield No4T Rifles. These are parts that I have gathered from various sources and reviewed for quality and use for my re-enacting group to present at events. With this knowledge and information I've tried to attain extra parts for those "just in case" uses and also present them here with the additional information gleaned through their use and application.
The chest hinge (commercial and MOD), hasp and latch (reproduction and Land Rover) are reproductions of what were "high street" items on the original WW2 procurement / build lists - also found in other applications - these hardware pieces are good to build new reproductions or repair original SA No15 chests for the No4mk1T. All of our hinge, hasp and latch pairs come with a set of the correct slot head countersunk (plain steel) screws. We have commissioned hinge production per the MOD drawing dated 1944 through to 1956 - hole location may vary on original war time chests so study closely. The latch was later used on Mk2 Land Rover vehicles to secure tool chest lids, these are excellent quality and finish and re simply the best for repairing original chests or vehicles.
The C No7 .22" rifle Chest using Canadian sourced longer 4 hole hinges - these are available from surplus and broken chest which are still quite affordable.
The hasps were also used on and these fit perfectly on the Bren chests, Bren 100 round magazine chests and others.
All screws and fasteners are modern production of the right design:
CSK S - Countersunk Slot Drive - bare steel finish.
RHS - Round Head Slot Drive (and Washers) - blacked finish
Screw designation letters are from the No15 Chest Drawing:
"A, D, F" CSK S - plain steel - 26 off of various sizes to secure the INTERNAL FILLETS - one kit per chest.
"B" CSK S - plain steel LID HINGE (6 each) - each chest needs 2 of each kit.
"C" CSK S - plain steel - LID TOGGLE (3 each) - east chest needs 2 kits. These screws are longer than specified / needed - file / trim to suit.
"G" CSK S - plain steel - 18 off to secure the CHEST BASE to the SIDES - one kit per chest.
"H" CSK S - plain steel - HASPS - two options use two screws (per the Canadians) or a screw and a rivet (per the British) - 2 kits per chest. These screws are longer than specified / needed - file / trim to suit.
"J"
RHS & Washer blacked - CARRY STRAPS (6 each), LID CHECK STRAPS (4 each) BRIDGE CHORDS (2 Each) - each chest needs 2 of each kit. These screws are longer than specified / need for the lid straps.
Transit Chest Lid Felt Seals are the DOT specification wool felt with good firmness and resilience, provide with 1/2 wide front and back strips, 3/4 wide end strips - trim to length, (apply with glue if desired - not included) and secure with the provided handcut and :tinned" tacks (the originals were tinned, these look the same via plating). These are a little narrower than the wood edge to allow for a little widening as they compress - apply with an equal gap on each side. The original specifications called for the felt to be treated with shellac, mineral oil or grease to provide water proofing and complete air tights seals - we are not storing these in underground bunkers anymore so I leave mine dry.
Rifle cradle felt kits fit the halves of the removable chest fillets, these are DOT specification wool felt with good firmness and resilience, these are custom rough cut slightly oversize, trim for straightness and fit and to allow for compression (widening), each fillet pair sold separately and include the hand cut tacks to hold them in place.
Scout scope housing felt kit - fits in the left lower compartment on the bottom of the left fillet and the left end plate of the crate, these are DOT specification beige wool felt with god firmness and resilience, these are custom rough cut slightly oversize, trim for straightness and fit to allow for compression (widening), sold as a telescope kit and includes hand cut tacks to hold them in place.
The original internal felt was preserved from mold and rot with iodine wash - that is how they look so yellow / orange. Make up your own iodine wash to color yellow as you wish.
The Transit Chest Stencil Kit is cut into craft paper with a mild adhesive backing sheet to peel them off
(like a post-it note)
. These can be (re-) used multiple times and will stick to a flat surface reducing bleed out. Three selections of script included "Chest SA No 15 Mk1" for front and back, "Rifle" for the front right and "Escortable Stores" for the front left. A standard letter / number stencil set can be used to put the rifle serial number next to the word "Rifle". Simple instructions included.
