RARE Original 1862 Fishing Voyage Journal, Maine Shipping Voyage TO THE FAMOUS ST. GEORGE'S BANKS FISHING GROUNDS in the Atlantic OceanDESCRIPTION: ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC AND RARE original official diary/ ship's journal kept by a Maine sea captain during 1862. HAND WRITTEN DAILY DETAILS ARE WRITTEN IN INK, RECORDED DURING THE VOYAGE IN A PURPOSELY PRINTED 1861 LOG BOOK. Identified in the front as "A.E. Brown, North Haven, Maine". He was the one listed who kept the log. Possibly a mate, as he was not the captain.
Voyage was listed on the top of each page as "the Banks", probably the famous St. George's Banks fishing grounds off Maine and Nova Scotia. The voyage covers the period April - July 1862. At the beginning of the log book is a 3 page description/instructions about using and getting the most out of the log book. Following this are 27 large pages of daily records, each written on BOTH sides, and virtually all filled out. The log book and pages measure roughly 8" x 12", so they contain a lot of information with this large format.
Kept in the Captain's Office, this log book was an active daily record of the voyage. Has all the details of the weather, voyage details such as location and directions, etc. A section in the back lists the number of fish caught by each person.
Condition is good condition considering it received regular use during the voyage and considering IT IS 160 YEARS OLD!!!! Writing is light in places, but generally readible. Binding is worn but covers are still attached.
GREAT DETAIL and rare, fantastic collector's item from an antique shipping/fishing voyage, related to Maine. Great item for a variety of collectors, whether of maritime, ships, fishing, commercial fishing, etc. This was there, and I mean THERE.
