We offer Plate 1 from "James Jenkins The Naval Achievements of Great Britain. From the Year 1793 to 1817.".
James Jenkins first published in 1817 a volume of fifty-five hand coloured aquatint plates depicting important naval battles of Great Britain. The plates were engraved by T. Sutherland, J. Jeakes and Bailey after paintings by Thomas Whitcombe. The volumes were published in limited editions as warranted by demand with the last documented edition published in 1840.
Plate 1 is titled "DESTRUCTION of the DANISH FLEET before COPENHAGEN, April 2nd. 1801.". Below is printed "Published June 1, 1816, at 48 Strand, for J. Jenkins's Naval Achievements.". Also printed at left corner "Painted by T. Whitcombe." and "Bailey Sculpt.".
Printed with wide margins on wove paper, the colours of the aquatint are bright with no yellowing of the paper. A pinpoint of foxing can be seen on the right hand margin where the matboard touches the paper.
