The fire pole screens began to appear in the 18th century. It is a smaller screen placed on a vertical pole which is mounted on a tripod; placed between a lit fire and an occupant of the room, the screen can be adjusted up or down to shield the person's face from the heat. The screen might be rectangular or a more decorous shape, and is decorated perhaps with embroidery, lacquer or paint.
I am not real familiar with these, but picked it up from The Estate of Joan Toto, a Renowned Antique Collector & Dealer in the Pittsburgh PA Area for many years.  Based on my research, most of these were made of wood bases and tapestry/needlepoint screens. Apparently earlier ones were made of cast iron or wrought iron.
This one has a cast iron base that is on casters for easy moving. It is very ornate, with camel toe feet. The pole itself is wood.  I am not sure of the material of the screen, but it is highly decorated with gold leaf around the edges and hand painted floral design in the center.  It seems like it is a light kind of wood, but I am not sure.  It has a lot of crazing and several cracks including a small piece on the top and bottom right that appear to have been glued back together.
Measurements: base is 23.5" high, 15" wide at the bottom.  Wood pole is a little over 39".  The screen is about 18" X 18".  With the pole in the base it is 61-1/4" High.
