THE ITEM DESCRIPTION:
The wind-up tin toy walking ostrich is Rudy from the Barney Google comic strip. Rudy shared a stable with Sparkplug the horse that Barney raced. The artist name is “signed” on the side of the toy - De Beck. The toy is 85% hand painted with just a little bit of lithography. The toy is in excellent working condition & all original. There is very little wear to the paint. I have never seen a better one in 40 years of collecting. The toy maker was H. Fischer of Nuremberg Germany. The name NIFTY appears on a lithographed tin plate on the underside of the toy along with the copyright date 1924 International Feature Service Inc. NIFTY was a brand name used exclusively by the Geo. Borgfeldt Company on their highest quality imported tin toys in the 1920s. Borgfeldt held the license to various comic strip characters & they approached toy & doll makers in Europe to produce items featuring their characters which they then imported into the US & distributed to stores. Many books on toy collecting as well as long time dealers continue to refer to NIFTY as a toy manufacturer. It is a brand name. The manufacturer was H. Fischer. Other comic character tin wind-up toys from Fischer produced between 1922 & 1926 include Barney Google riding Sparkplug, the Toonerville Trolley, Hi-Way Henry, Felix Walking, Crawling Buttercup & the 2 versions of Powerful Katrinka lifting Jimmy. Rudy the ostrich is a hard to find but obscure comic character toy.
