    THE ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This is a licensed & authorized comic character toy made in Germany circa 1922 by Johann Distler Co. The German Uncle Wiggily Crazy Car predates the Louis Marx tin toy version of the crazy car by about 12 years. The German toy is 9 1/2” long & 6 1/2” to the top of UW's head. It is in excellent working condition with very little play wear & 100% original condition. On the front of the car it is marked Copyright Howard R. Garis. Garis was the prolific writer of Uncle Wiggily stories which were illustrated by various artists. The best known of the UW artists was Lansing Campbell & he is the one most likely responsible for the “look” of UW as he appears on this toy – an elegantly dressed gentleman rabbit wearing a top hat, carrying a briefcase & holding a long walking stick or cane. The toy auto design consists of a linked series of colorful geometric shapes including pyramids, rhombus, scalene triangles & more. GERMANY is printed in the wheel well of the back right tire. On the back of the car is lithographed a spare tire & a very small single tail light in the lower left. Next to the tail light it reads B&S 890 N.J. About this time (early 1920s) there was a toy maker & distributor in N.J. with the trademark B&R that made lithographed tin character toys including a Charlie Chaplin walker & Kid Samson. I am guessing that an affiliated company of B&R was the distributor of the toy in the US. The maker of this UW Crazy Car was Johann Distler & there is a Distler catalog from the early 1920s which pictures the toy. The version of the toy that was made to be sold in Germany has the Distler trademark while the toy that was made to be sold in the US does not.
