Very RARE FLAT, EARLY ORIGINAL Antique Colonial Tin Candle Mold, 4 TUBE SIZE FOR 4 CANDLES, c.1780, Hand Made by Early TinsmithD
ESCRIPTION:
Scans show it all.....a very early tin candle mold, c.1780. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL HAND MADE COLONIAL TIN ITEM AND NOT A REPRODUCTION. It has 4 "tubes" to make 4 candles at a time. THE RARE PART IS THAT IT IS THE ONLY FLAT 4-TUBE MOLD I HAVE EVER SEEN. Probably a different and unique style made by a particular tinsmith.
Tin candle molds were quite an improvement and time saver over hand-dipping candles on early farms, but were rather expensive in colonial money and not too common. Occasionally someone wanted the "new technology", but could not afford a larger mold. In these cases a 1-tube, 2-tube, 3-tube, or 4-tube mold fit the bill.
This was hand made by an early tin smith. It is the earliest style, with no bottom rack holding the tubes, dating it to about 1770-80. Holes in each tube at the bottom to hold the wick before adding the wax. No handle and does not appear that it ever was made with one.
It stands 10 1/2" tall and is roughly 4 1/2" wide at the top. There is no handle and it does not appear that it ever was made with one. AGAIN, INDICATIVE OF AN EARLIER STYLE AND AGE. The top was made to hold the tubes in place. It also has a little "dam" around the edge so that molten wax would not overflow. This mold is the angled type, and at the bottom the tubes come together and are soldered, as shown. This was a simpler style AND AGAIN, AN EARLIER design. In very good, original condition.
Each tube is about 3/4" diameter.
THIS CANDLE MOLD HAS LOTS OF EARLY, ANTIQUE, COLONIAL EYE APPEAL, especially with the small size flat style, and WILL MAKE A GREAT ANTIQUE, PERIOD DECORATION PIECE.
THIS WAS HANDMADE OUT OF PIECES OF TIN SHEETS BY AN EARLY NEW ENGLAND TINSMITH. In very good condition overall. Nice aged tin patina and appearance.
Nice early item from a Massachusetts estate sale, from my personal collection. OVER 200 YEARS OLD!!! Great colonial decoration item for a mantle or in a kitchen display or as a gift.
