Vintage Jointed Wooden Pinocchio Puppet- Handmade, signed w/initials A.G. 12" tallThis Pinocchio was likely made from a pattern in a crafters magazine. It is not true "folk art" but rather a craft project from long ago. My guess is the 1950s but it could be from earlier. It was lovingly painted by someone who was good at this sort of crafts.
I think the puppet used to have a dowel that attached at the button area of the painted vest. The hole is there and I would guess that it could easily be replaced. It likely had a wooden "button" on the end to make it less noticeable to those watching; at least, that's what I would have done to the end of the dowel. I remember birthday parties of friends in the 1950s sometimes had puppet shows and my nursery school also had them. (Geez, I'm old!)
The toy is in good condition with a couple of newer wires attaching the feet. The right arm has a repair at the shoulder and the right thigh has been glued with the red having been retouched- this was probably a repair made by the maker as it is well disguised.
The bench and trees are props that were also handmade. One tree is missing a foot but still stands well. They would have been used frequently as they would work in many puppet stories.
