    Description

    Liberty ships
were a class of cargo ship built in the United States during World War II.
More than 2,700 cargo vessels ferried personnel, tanks, ammunition, food and other vital supplies to Allied troops during the war, their holds secured by the 2½-inch-thick covers made of hefty heart pine.
These mass-produced Liberty ships came to symbolize U.S. wartime industrial output.
    After WW II
most surviving vessels were deconstructed and
it became popular to salvage their hatch covers which had become ruggedly unique from their weathering at sea. Many hatch doors were then made into tables, as they were the perfect size to use without having to cut the hatch apart. Most of the hatch doors, including this one, were composed of 2 1/2" thick pine board and were topped with metal (usually zinc-based or galvanized steel) strappings near the circular cut-outs on each end of the hatch door. These tables include the original metal bars designed for lifting the hatch from the deck.
This Liberty Hatch Coffee Table was purchased finished in thick, maritime spar or polyurethane, unlike many other hatch tables that have a rough finish.
Please inspect all pictures. There are some light scratches accumulated over the years. This table is very heavy and currently in our garage for a quick transport to your truck or SUV.
Time for someone else to enjoy it as my husband and I are retired and downsizing.
